Woman Shot at Sacramento Panera; Highway 50 Closed During Police Investigation

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — 3:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 8, 2026 — A major police response has shut down portions of Highway 50 in Sacramento following a reported shooting involving a man and woman Tuesday afternoon.

According to preliminary information, a woman was reportedly shot at a Panera Bread before the suspect fled the area. A subsequent police response led authorities to close Highway 50 near Howe Avenue as officers searched for and located the suspect.

The incident is reportedly being investigated as a murder-suicide, although authorities have not yet released a full account of what happened.

Highway 50 Shut Down

Highway 50 was closed in both directions near Howe Avenue, with the shutdown extending through the Howe and Watt Avenue areas as law enforcement investigated.

Traffic quickly backed up as motorists were diverted from the freeway. A reported detour from Hazel Avenue toward Folsom Boulevard and back toward Highway 50 at Sunrise was also affected by the police activity.
